AI Code Review Slack Bot

A short prompt in Google AI Studio got Jordan a Slack look-alike with a Bito code review bot. It's a fun prototype, not a production integration, but it points at a real customer request.

For Episode 23 (December 5, 2025), Jordan built a Slack bot prototype for our guest's company, Bito, an AI code review tool. He made it in Google AI Studio from a very basic prompt. The result looks like Slack and has a Bito bot that answers commands: review your last PR, tell a joke, write a haiku, or start a disco. He didn't say how long it took. Evidence on this one is light: it's a short, playful demo.

Why we built it

On our pre-call, Jordan learned that Bito didn't have a formal Slack integration or bot yet. We use Slack all the time for notifications and callouts when things go wrong, so a code review bot there felt like a natural fit.

The stack

  • Google AI Studio: built the whole thing, including a look-alike of the Slack interface.
I built this using Google AI Studio which has been really helpful in kind of like building out these types of tools.

— Jordan Metzner, Episode 23

How we built it, step by step

  1. Prompt AI Studio for a Slack bot agent. One basic prompt, and it imitated the Slack interface on its own.
  2. Add a help command. "Bito help" lists what the bot can do: review, tests, explain, last, stats, fun and surprise.
  3. Add a last-PR review. "Bito last" showed Jordan's most recent PR, a dark mode toggle, failing on a critical security bug, with the reasoning behind the verdict.
  4. Add the fun commands. "Bito fun" tells developer jokes, "Bito surprise" writes a haiku ("Code push to main. Fingers crossed the tests all pass. Prod is now updated."), and "Bito disco" makes the bot dance to disco music.

How it turned out

Bito CEO Amar Goel enjoyed it. He'd used the same developer joke in cold emails, which he said gets a high open rate if not amazing responses. He also pointed out the PR had maintainability bugs on top of the security one. His verdict at 04:34 was to "roll this out to production right away." Jordan disagreed: it's "definitely not ready," and he didn't go deep into Bito's platform.

The useful part was what Amar said next:

We have had this request for, like, hey. Can you make my code review notifications or just, you know, let me know as a developer when the review's finished running or, you know, highlighting issues or maybe for the reviewer, hey, like, Bito's run.

— Amar Goel, Episode 23

What we'd do differently

Start from the customer request rather than the jokes: a real bot connected to a real Slack workspace that pings the developer when a review finishes and tells the reviewer what Bito found. Jordan expects there are more Bito calls worth exposing in Slack that he didn't explore.

The rest of the episode covers why AI coding tools struggle with large legacy codebases. For more on that, see AI in developer tools and our Claude Code vs Google AI Studio comparison.

FAQ

Can you build a Slack bot with Google AI Studio?

Jordan built a prototype with a very basic prompt about building a bot agent for Slack. AI Studio produced an imitation of the Slack interface with the bot inside it, not a bot installed in a real Slack workspace.

Does Bito have a Slack integration?

At the time of Episode 23 (December 2025), Jordan's understanding was that Bito didn't have a formal Slack integration or bot yet. Bito CEO Amar Goel said customers had asked for Slack notifications when reviews finish or find issues.

What should an AI code review Slack bot do?

Amar's customers want a ping when a review finishes running, a summary of the issues it found, and a heads-up for the human reviewer that Bito has already run so they can dig in.
