Claude Design to Claude Code Redesign

Link your code base to Claude Design, chat through a redesign, click 'hand off to Claude Code', and give the zip to Claude Code. Sam had a fully redesigned internal app live in about 30 minutes.

In Episode 40 (April 24, 2026), Sam showed how he redesigned one of our internal web apps without opening Figma. He linked the app's code base to Claude Design, chatted his way to a page-by-page redesign, then used the "hand off to Claude Code" option. Claude Code applied the new design across the whole app, and it was live in production in about 30 minutes. It was the first time he'd tried it.

Why we built it

Sam wanted a polished new design for an internal app we use, and by his own account his Figma skills are "pretty awful." Claude Design had just launched, and he'd already used it for things like HipTrain Meta ad concepts. The handoff to Claude Code was the share option he found most interesting.

The stack

  • Claude Design: connected to the local code base, produced the redesign page by page, and exported the handoff.
  • Claude Code: took the handoff zip and rewrote the app to match.

How we built it, step by step

  1. Link your local code base to Claude Design. That gives it the app's real structure and functionality to redesign.
  2. Chat through the redesign. Claude Design returned designs page by page: the homepage, then other pages, keeping "the exact functionality of our app."
  3. Click "hand off to Claude Code." Once Sam was happy with the design, this option in the share menu created a zip file.
  4. Give the zip to Claude Code. It updated the entire app to the new design.
  5. Ship it. The redesigned app went to production.
And within, you know, however long it took, it actually took quite a while, thirty minutes, the entire web app was fully updated to the new design and the results were amazing.

— Sam Nadler, Episode 40

How it turned out

On air, Sam put the production version next to the Claude Design mockups. He called the redesign "very, in my opinion, polished," and said it was "fully redesigned all the way through."

And it's a little squished here, but I took it to this is the one where I exported to hand off to Claude Code, gave it to Claude Code, and within thirty minutes, I had it live in production.

— Sam Nadler, Episode 40

It spread fast. Sam showed a few teammates who maintain their own internal web apps how to do it, and about an hour before recording they were showing him their new designs, which he called "brilliant."

What we'd do differently

Expect the handoff to take a while. Thirty minutes is quick for a full redesign, but Sam said it "actually took quite a while" compared with the chat part. He also learned to start a new chat in Claude Design for each new direction, since it keeps prompting you to save on context.

Jordan asked whether Sam would abandon Claude Design if these features were folded into Claude Code. Sam said yes, and was a little surprised it's a separate product. Jordan's guess at 09:27 is that a web app is a fast way for Anthropic to test demand before rolling it into the desktop app, as with Claude Cowork. His verdict: it "definitely feels like a little bit of a Figma killer." See Claude Design vs Figma.

FAQ

How does Claude Design hand off to Claude Code?

In the share options, choose 'hand off to Claude Code'. Claude Design creates a zip file of the design, which you give to Claude Code to implement in your code base.

Can you redesign a web app with AI?

Sam did. He linked his internal app's local code base to Claude Design, got a page-by-page redesign through chat, then Claude Code applied it to the whole app. It was live in production in about 30 minutes.

How long does the Claude Code handoff take?

About 30 minutes for Sam's internal web app. He said it 'actually took quite a while', but the entire app was updated to the new design.

Is Claude Design easier than Figma for non-designers?

For Sam, yes. He called his Figma skills 'pretty awful' and said Claude Design is as easy as chatting with any AI. Jordan said it feels like a bit of a Figma killer.
