Tristan Wilson

Tristan Wilson, a former road-construction estimator, runs Edgevanta: AI agents that read bid packages, extract bid items and use DOT pricing history so contractors leave less on the table.

Tristan Wilson is the CEO and founder of Edgevanta, which makes AI agents for civil construction estimating. He grew up in the industry as a project manager and estimator at his family's road construction company in Louisiana. After the business was sold, he moved to Nashville and started Edgevanta in 2022. He joined us in Episode 16 (October 10, 2025).

We make AI agents for civil estimating.

— Tristan Wilson, Episode 16

What Edgevanta does

Edgevanta's customers are civil contractors: firms that move dirt, lay pipe, pave roads and do heavy site work. Their estimators get bid packages of 1,200 to 1,500 pages, of which maybe 80 to 100 pages really matter. Estimators upload the documents, and Edgevanta's agents, trained on civil construction data, pull out what matters. The estimator reviews the results as the human in the loop.

The product does three jobs. It reviews documents and extracts bid items, it summarizes incoming bid packages for go/no-go decisions, and it pulls historical pricing from Department of Transportation websites so agents can answer questions about the market and competitors.

Key ideas from the conversation

  • A missed detail can cost the job (08:05). As an estimator, Tristan missed a small requirement in an addendum to a $6.5 million airport bid. He submitted it 19 seconds late, on a job where his company would have been the low bidder.
  • Two hours of typing becomes two minutes (10:58). An estimator in South Carolina used to type the bid items from three bid forms into Excel by hand. With Edgevanta she presses a button and exports a CSV.
  • Bid data is real money (12:58). His family's company was leaving 11% on the table between first and second place. Better bid data brought that to about 7%, putting almost $8 million back in their pocket.
  • The value of go/no-go is the time you don't waste (13:57). Contractors get dozens of bid packages a week. A structured summary saves 30 to 45 minutes on each job they would never bid on.
  • AI helps estimators; it does not replace them (16:28). Some rooms he presents to are full of fear. His answer is that hand-entering 120 line items does not make anyone a better estimator. Edgevanta has caught conflicts in owner documents that a careful human missed.
And I submitted my bid, which was 6 and a half million dollars nineteen seconds late, and we would have had low bid and won the job.

— Tristan Wilson, Episode 16

You know, it it doesn't get tired. It it and it's one great rule of thumb that I make sure to tell to everybody that we work with is that assume this is the worst AI that you're ever gonna use.

— Tristan Wilson, Episode 16

In the news segment, Tristan called AI "massively underhyped." He estimated that 15 to 20% of the firms he talks to use AI across the company, often through OpenAI enterprise accounts, but said very few AI tools are built specifically for civil construction. For more on this, see our AI in construction page, including our conversation with Eldar Sadikov of Field Materials AI.

What we built for the episode

Jordan made two Edgevanta-themed browser games for the opening. Edgevanta Tycoon is a RollerCoaster Tycoon-style game: you bid on projects like a $150K downtown parking lot, take the game's bid suggestion, and earn Edgevanta agents such as a bid brief summary agent. The highway paving mini-game has you crush rocks, heat them, pave a highway and roll it out. Jordan did not say which tools he used to build either game.

FAQ

Who is Tristan Wilson?

Tristan Wilson is the CEO and founder of Edgevanta. He grew up in construction, worked as a project manager and estimator at his family's road construction business in Louisiana, and started Edgevanta in Nashville in 2022 after the family business was sold.

What does Edgevanta do?

Edgevanta makes AI agents for civil construction estimating. They parse bid documents, extract bid items, support go/no-go decisions and query historical Department of Transportation bid pricing.

Will Edgevanta replace construction estimators?

Tristan says no. The estimator stays the human in the loop, reviews every document and is still responsible for the bid; the agents remove data entry and catch things people miss.

How much time does Edgevanta save?

In one example Tristan gave, typing bid items from three bid forms into Excel took an estimator about two hours. With Edgevanta it took about two minutes.
