Bolt vs Google AI Studio

For quick demos and throwaway apps, Google AI Studio replaced Bolt for us in late 2025, mainly because Gemini is built in, so adding AI to an app needs no back end or API keys.

The short answer

Pick Google AI Studio if your app needs AI inside it, or you want a quick demo with suggestions while it builds. Bolt is still fine for a plain front end or landing page, especially if you want it wired to Supabase.

For us this was not close once Google launched its builder in October 2025. The week of Halloween, both of us built "pretty much exclusively" in AI Studio, and by April 2026 it was our go-to for quick demos while Bolt had dropped out of use.

What we built with each

Bolt builds (mid-2025)

Google AI Studio builds (late 2025 onward)

The Halloween builds show the pattern. For the route planner, Jordan typed one long prompt asking for a tool that "optimizes my route for trick or treating," let any user in the US pick a city and parameters, then clicked AI Studio's suggested features such as a current location button. Mirror, Mirror used the camera and pulled in his words in real time. None of these needed a back end we set up ourselves.

Sam put the question directly in Episode 19: was AI Studio just like the other tools, or was it better? Jordan's answer is the core of this page:

Oh, no. There's a step function improvement here, and the step function improvement is that Gemini is already integrated. If you were to go back to like a Bolt or a Lovable or any of those and you wanted to add AI into your app, you need to, you know, usually build some type of back end or something to call those APIs.

— Jordan Metzner, Episode 19

Deployment was Sam's first question on launch day. He pointed out that in Bolt "you can essentially take your build and pretty much deploy it immediately," so Jordan clicked through AI Studio's options live: deploy the app, push it to GitHub, download it, share it with a link, switch on API keys, and preview it on different devices, including a rotated phone (Episode 18, at 29:23). Neither tool lost on that front.

The feature suggestions mattered too. While the weather app was building, AI Studio proposed weather alerts and an hourly forecast. Jordan said "it's actually thinking of new ideas and recommending them to you" (Episode 18, at 28:18).

Where each one fell short

Bolt. The AI gap above is the big one. Our Bolt builds also tended to leave Bolt: Mate and the Collective dashboard both moved into Cursor to get finished. In Episode 38, Sam grouped Bolt with Lovable as tools we demoed "back in the day" and are "not really using anymore."

Google AI Studio. Setup. Jordan said in Episode 38 that "you might have to set it up with, an API key so you can pay for your use. It's a little complicated." He also places it with Bolt and Lovable as a demo tool, not where you build "a big piece of software." On launch day he admitted he was not sure what permissions you need without his paid Gemini account.

Which one we reach for now

Google AI Studio, for anything quick. In Episode 38 (April 2026), Sam said a throwaway or "really fast demo" goes to AI Studio, and bigger work starts in Claude Code. Jordan agreed:

I still really love this Google, like, AI Studio for just building out little web apps because it's it's so fast and so clean and gives you good inspiration.

— Jordan Metzner, Episode 38

He also likes having many tools in one standardized UI: the model picker, research with Google Search grounding, plus image, music and video generation. Sam already used it to run Nano Banana for the hoodie charm store product images in Episode 12.

If you liked Bolt for speed, try AI Studio next. If your project outgrows both, see Claude Code vs Google AI Studio and Google AI Studio vs Lovable.

FAQ

Is Google AI Studio better than Bolt?

For apps that need AI inside them, Jordan called it a step-function improvement, because Gemini is already integrated. With Bolt you usually need a back end, an API choice and a key to add AI.

Can Google AI Studio deploy an app like Bolt?

Yes. When Sam asked in Episode 18, Jordan showed options to deploy the app, push to GitHub, download it, share a link and test on mobile.

Is Google AI Studio free?

We did not test pricing. Jordan said in April 2026 that you may need to set it up with an API key so you can pay for your use, and that the setup is a little complicated.

When should I still use Bolt?

Bolt is fine for a front-end-only demo or landing page, and it connects to Supabase. We have not used it much since late 2025.
