Bolt vs Replit

Use Replit when your tool needs a back end, database, auth or API calls; use Bolt for front-end-only demos and prototypes. That split held across every build we did with them in 2025.

The short answer

Pick Replit when the tool you are building needs a back end: a database, storage, stored API keys, some auth, or calls to an outside API. Pick Bolt when you only need a front end, like a product demo or a landing page.

That is the rule Jordan laid out in our very first episode, in June 2025, and our builds followed it. Jordan built six Replit apps on the show; Sam built in Bolt and calls Replit his least favorite.

What we built with each

Replit builds

Bolt builds

Look at the two lists and the split is plain. Every Replit build talks to an outside service. The Bolt builds are interfaces, and when they needed data, Supabase or Cursor did the heavy lifting.

Here is how Jordan explained it in Episode 1:

When I'm building things where I wanna build like a product demo or just a front end for like my product teams, I'll probably use something like Bold or Lovable or some other tool, or even Cursor. But when I wanna build something that I need like an API and I need to make some some functional calls, I'll go to Replit.

— Jordan Metzner, Episode 1

("Bold" is how the transcript caught Bolt.) Jordan repeated the same split in Episode 9: sometimes Bolt or Lovable is the right call, sometimes Replit "as it has, like, built in back end."

Where each one fell short

Bolt. Adding AI to a Bolt app means building a back end, choosing an API and getting a key (Episode 19, at 13:30). That is exactly the work Replit's stored keys made easy for Jordan. Our Bolt projects also tended to move to Cursor to get finished.

Replit. Jordan himself framed it as a tool for things that maybe are not "gonna scale to like a huge organization." And not everyone likes it. When Replit's big raise came up in Episode 12, Sam said:

I know it's your favorite. It's actually probably my least favorite, which is just shows there's, you know, a vibe coding tool for everyone out there.

— Sam Nadler, Episode 12

Jordan pushed back a little: "I don't know if it's my favorite," but its built-in database and authentication make it "really easy to build stuff." We never compared pricing.

What our guests use

In Episode 14, Jordan asked Hooman Radfar about Replit's "end to end" path from an idea in chat to a working app in the browser, and wondered if Bolt and Lovable would build something similar. Hooman's view was that everyone has an angle, design first or concept first, and every tool will have a role. No guest told us which one they build in.

Which one we reach for now

In 2025, the Episode 1 rule held: Replit for anything with a back end, Bolt for front ends. In 2026 both faded for us. In Episode 38 (April 2026), Jordan's framework still puts Replit and Lovable in the slot for something that needs "a quick database" and will be thrown away, and Bolt with Google AI Studio for a quick demo. But big software now goes to Claude Code, Cursor or OpenAI Codex, and Sam said we are not really using Bolt or Lovable anymore.

If you are choosing between these two today, use the Episode 1 rule. For where we went next, see Bolt vs Google AI Studio and Bolt vs Claude Code.

FAQ

Is Replit better than Bolt?

It depends on the job. Jordan picks Replit for small tools that need a back end, database, storage or some auth, and Bolt or Lovable for product demos and front ends only.

Can Replit build a full-stack app?

Yes. Jordan built the Public API trading bot's entire front end and back end in Replit in about three to six hours, plus the Ryz Labs Video Studio, Autoblogger, Podcast CRM and Ryz Chef.

Does Bolt have a back end?

Bolt connects directly to Supabase, which is how Sam built Daily Check-in. Adding AI calls still means setting up a back end, picking an API and managing keys.

Which do you prefer, Bolt or Replit?

We split. Jordan loves Replit for its built-in database and authentication; Sam said in Episode 12 it is probably his least favorite vibe coding tool. By 2026 we used neither much.
